Even though the end of my tour in Egypt overlapped with the historic revolution happening there now, I have elected in this photo album to focus on the incredible natural beauty and historic wonder of the place.

Hi Joe. What height are you ? Because I recenty bought a LHT 26 for touring / bikebacking. I kitted it out with apidura bags. Im not sure now if I should have got a size smaller than what I was fitted for. Its a 56 but maybe a 54 would have been better for handling on dirt roads and rougher terrain. This is all new to me its my first ever touring bike and trip.. thanks , Liam

Hey Liam, thanks for visiting. I miss my original LHT—it never made it back from Egypt, but understandably so since that was a tense period during the Arab Spring and Turkish Air compensated me for losing track of it. Very capable bicycle! I am 173cm (5’8″) and the 54 LHT was just at the limit (in the direction of being too big) that I can happily ride. Surly designs their bikes with a bias toward long top tube, reflecting the fact that for a lot of men their height is in their torso and they have long arms. I’m the opposite, my torso and arms are shorter than most men of my height, so I was a bit stretched on that 54.

But you’re asking a different question, namely about handling and rough terrain. Yes, I suppose that in the mountain biking world, many riders prefer a smaller bike to be able to throw it around. I don’t think that’s much of a consideration for the kind of terrain you’re likely to go looking for on your LHT, so—if the bike fits you—I wouldn’t imagine any need to size down just for the sake of off-roadability.

a 26″ LHT with Apidura bags: that’s going to be a great bikepacking platform! (Not least of all because the big main triangle lets you put a big frame bag in there.) Send a link to photos when you get a chance, and have a great time.

Wow thank you so much for such a quick and informative reply. It has reassured me a lot ! I’m 5 10 (178cm) height with a inside 32 so the 56 LHT feels good. End of story.
Really looking forward to my trip starting in Cherbourg France heading south on the velos to San Sebastion Spain. Then through Spain then possibly Portugal. Then on to Granada and the Sierra Nevadas as my final destination.
Im a gardener by trade and hope to incorporate work into the trip by Wwoofing etc.
I love my set up (pics to follow) Im new to this so have made a few blips already. Got 65 sks bluemels for 1.75s ! Wont look so big when I get to buying mondials ( after my tourRIDEs burn out). Had an issue with bags and cantis but thats been resolved. I do wish I had flared dirt drops or jones bar so my handlebar bag could go full capacity but Ive maxed my gear budget already. Cant complain just gotta get out there now.
So here come the pics. Again thank you very much and keep it up your articles, stories and help are invaluable and great fun too.
